NABAWAN: The over 60 years old wooden bridge at KM0.2 along Sungai Nabawan near town here will be upgraded to a concrete bridge.
Nabawan Assemblyman Datuk Abdul Ghani Mohamed Yassin said the construction of a concrete bridge worth RM2.7 million under the allocation of the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW) will start in August.
It is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2025.
“When it is ready, road users and villagers in this area will no longer feel worried, especially during heavy rains and floods because the bridge is strong,” he said.
Ghani, who is also Chairman of the Sabah State Land Development Board (LKTNS), spoke to reporters after inspecting the location of the bridge, recently.
He said during the construction of the new concrete bridge, the route will be closed until the work is completed. However, he said an alternative route has been identified and will be communicated to all road users.
Ghani also informed that another wooden bridge that connects to the Nabawan Health Clinic will also be upgraded to a concrete bridge once the first bridge is completed.
At the same time, Ghani said the dilapidated wooden bridge in Kg Bahagia, here, also has the attention of the authorities as it services some 1,000 villagers.
Meanwhile, resident Pius Ahilob, said he is grateful to the government and representatives of the people who are concerned about the problems of the people.
“We are happy because when the new bridge is ready, the residents will be very comfortable,” he said.
Another resident, Raimin Angkapul, said the road users are happy on the construction of the new bridge.
“We have been waiting for a more decent bridge for a long time because the existing bridge which is more than 60 years old is worn out,” he said.
Earlier, Ghani visited the former Nabawan Native Chief, Asri Ulah, who is bed-ridden for almost 10 years following a road accident.
Ghani and his entourage presented financial contribution to ease the burden of Asri’s family.
