PETALING JAYA: Pahang executive councillor Nizar Najib has denied rumours that he met with opposition leaders in a bid to overthrow the state government.
The Peramu Jaya assemblyman said such "fairy tale meetings" never took place, adding that he remains loyal to Umno, Barisan Nasional (BN), and the current Pahang government.
In a Facebook post, Nizar said his father, former prime minister Najib Razak, always stressed the need to stay loyal to Umno, no matter the circumstances.
"How could I possibly conspire to betray the party that my family and other Umno members have fought for since its establishment?" said Nizar.
“How could I possibly defect and betray the Pahang government led by menteri besar Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail, a leader whom I deeply admire and respect?
"I am not a political frog who will compromise my principles and dignity or ‘sell’ myself to the highest bidder."
Nizar, who heads the Pahang government’s investment, industries, science, technology and innovation committee, was responding to a viral poster on social media which claimed that the Pahang state administration was unstable.
The poster also claimed that Nizar had met with Perikatan Nasional (PN) representatives, and that a new state government would be formed in Pahang.
A motion to amend the state constitution was passed on Nov 20, 2020, allowing the state assembly to appoint five assemblymen without an election process.
This brought the total number of assemblymen to 47, including the 42 elected during the 15th general election in 2022.
BN has 17 elected assemblymen and Pakatan Harapan eight, making a total of 25 for the unity government. PN meanwhile has 17.
