RM212 million boost for local authorities

Kota Kinabalu: The Federal Government through the Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT) has allocated RM211,898,427 to implement various development projects in Sabah this year.

Minister Nga Kor Ming symbolically handed over the allocation to Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor at the Chief Minister’s official residence, Sri Gaya, Friday.

Hajiji also witnessed the handover of the Kota Kinabalu Kayu Madang New Solid Waste Sanitary Landfill Upgrade Project, which has been completed, to the State Government.

KPKT through the National Solid Waste Management Department (JPSPN) implemented a new cell construction project at the Kayu Madang solid waste sanitary landfill in February 2024 costing RM44.14 million.

The newly completed site is capable of receiving 850 metric tonnes of solid waste per day, equipped with a linear system, leachate collection system and gas release system.

JPSPN has upgraded the “Leachate Treatment Plant” by using advanced nanofiltration technology and allows the leachate to pass all 24 parameters set by the Environment Department (JAS) before the treated water is released to the water source.

The project would benefit residents in five Local Authorities (PBT) namely DBKK, Putatan District Council, Tuaran District Council, Kota Belud District Council and Penampang Municipal Council.

KPKT through JPSPN is designing two more projects worth RM77 million, namely the South West Coast Solid Waste Sanitary Landfill Construction Project with a cost of RM47 million and RM30 million for the Labuk Solid Waste Sanitary Landfill upgrade project, Sandakan. KPKT also requesting allocations from Economy Ministry for the approval of the Fifth Rolling Plan (RP5) Year 2025 for four more new solid waste management projects specifically for Sabah worth almost RM105mil.

The projects are the construction of Phase 1 Lahad Datu Landfill Level 4 Centred Solid Waste Sanitary Disposal Site at a cost of RM40,995,364.86; safe closure of Kg Langkawit Solid Waste Disposal Site in Papar at a cost of RM17,010,000; the construction of Kota Marudu Solid Waste Sanitary Landfill (RM21,011,898.48) and the construction of Keningau Solid Waste Sanitary Landfill (RM25,956,844.95).
