KOTA KINABALU: The Kota Kinabalu Journalists Association (KKJA) has extended its reach to Semporna for the 7th China-Sabah Short Film Competition, aiming to strengthen cultural ties between Sabah and China.
KKJA Chairman Jimmy Goh, accompanied by Vice President Peter Kwan and Secretary Teo Jinn Jiun, met with Datuk Peter Gan, President of Semporna Chinese Chamber of Commerce, on Saturday.
They presented competition posters to be distributed to local schools, encouraging participation from teachers and students across Semporna.
“Previous competitions have seen entries from Semporna, some collaboratively produced by locals and Chinese participants,” Jimmy said.
He highlighted Semporna’s potential as a popular tourist destination for Chinese visitors, offering unique perspectives on China-Sabah friendships.
Meanwhile, Gan, who is also Chairman of SJK (C) Nyuk Hwa Board of Governors, expressed full support for the event.
“Participating in this competition is especially meaningful as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Malaysia-China diplomatic relations,” Gan said.
He emphasised the association’s commitment to promoting the event, particularly encouraging participation from diverse ethnic communities.
The competition, organised by the Consulate General of China in Kota Kinabalu and hosted by KKJA, is now accepting submissions until October 20. With over RM 40,000 in prizes, it invites participants to share China-Sabah stories through short films.
