Voluntary Fireman dies after crash at Jalan Kota Marudu-Marak Parak

KOTA MARUDU: An Auxiliary Fire Officer died on Monday after 35 hours of fighting for his life at the hospital as a result of a road accident in Kampung Hitob along Jalan Kota Marudu-Marak Parak near here last Sunday.

The victim, Masreh Masah, 50, who was on duty at the Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) in Kota Belud, died while receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) ward of Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH).

Kota Marudu District Police Chief, Supt Simiun Lomudin said the 10.30am accident involved a Proton Iswara Aeroback car and the Yamaha R15 motorcycle that Masreh was riding.

According to Simiun, initial investigations found that the car driven by the 33-year-old man was moving from Marak Parak towards Pekan Kota Marudu.

“Upon arriving at the scene, while going through the bend and going downhill, the motorcycle of the victim from the opposite direction is suspected to have lost control and entered the right lane and collided with the car.

“As a result, the motorcyclist sustained severe abdominal injuries and received initial treatment at the Kota Marudu Hospital Emergency Ward before being sent to QEH for further treatment,” he said.

Simiun said that he received a call from the hospital informing that the victim was pronounced dead at 9.30pm on Monday.

He said the driver of the car only suffered minor injuries to his hand and was treated as an outpatient at the Kota Marudu Hospital Emergency Ward.

Simiun said investigations are still ongoing according to Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act (APJ) 1987.

He hopes those with information about the accident would come forward to aid investigations.
