Kota Kinabalu: City Hall will propose to the Sabah Government to extend the “No Plastic Bags” policy statewide.

Equipment would also be purchased to clean up plastic bottles and garbage along the coasts of Kota Kinabalu and the Sabah Park Islands.

Mayor Datuk Dr Haji Sabin bin Samitah said this during a courtesy visit by the Sabah China Chamber of Commerce led by Datuk Frankie Liew.

Frankie said the business community had responded positively to the “No Plastic Bags” policy implemented by City Hall since Aug 1.

Sabin said he would convey the chamber’s suggestion to the Sabah Government.

The chamber also raised concerns about the significant amount of garbage, particularly in the marine areas of Kota Kinabalu.

Sabin said it had applied for funding to purchase the necessary equipment.

“Once the equipment is procured, we will collect the waterfront garbage by boat, transport it to the shore and then use trucks to haul it to the Kayu Matang landfill in Telipok for disposal,” he said.

The clean-up campaign would begin in the waterfront and tourist pier areas of Kota Kinabalu and then extend to Gaya Island, New Brunei, Tanjung Aru and Sungai Darau to clean up marine debris.

The mayor praised the chamber for its efforts in promoting trade and business exchanges between Sabah and China.

He hoped they would bring more entrepreneurs and investments to Sabah.

He also promised to meet with potential and capable Chinese enterprises recommended by the chamber and provide full assistance within his capacity.

He hope the Chamber could Kota Kinabalu as a starting point to attract more investors to Sabah and introduce them to other potential areas for investment and development in various important industries, including agriculture and food processing.

“I hope the matters discussed today can be successfully implemented as soon as possible,” Sabin said.
