Mahathir’s sons given one last extension to declare assets: Azam
MACC chief Azam Baki said Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s sons have until mid-September to declare their assets.
PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission has granted former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s two older sons a final one-month extension to declare their assets to the anti-graft agency.

"MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki said the duo have until mid-September to declare their assets.That will be final. If they fail to comply, MACC will take legal action," he told the media after opening an MACC programme at a hotel here today.

In May, MACC agreed to grant an extension to Mirzan Mahathir and his brother, Mokhzani, to declare their assets.

Azam however did not disclose the length of the extension given.

The siblings were ordered by MACC in January to declare their assets dating back to 1981, the year Mahathir became the prime minister.

The brothers have received two extensions to the original February deadline for compliance.

On a separate matter, Azam said the investigation into bribery involving two highway projects worth RM11 billion in the Klang Valley has deepened, with 11 individuals arrested and 11 investigation papers opened.

"My investigating officers informed me that each investigation required up to six witnesses, so altogether, we need at least 50 witnesses," he said.

In June, highway concessionaire Prolintas Group confirmed that its CEO and two senior management members had been arrested by MACC over the two projects. Prolintas’s CEO is Azlan Abdullah.

MACC also arrested five individuals who own a company for allegedly offering bribes for the contracts.

On a social media influencer couple suspected of embezzling public funds from an online crowdfunding platform, Azam said the investigation paper has been submitted to the deputy public prosecutor.

Last month, MACC arrested the couple – Hazalif Hazani, 30, also known as Alif Teega, and his wife, Aisyah Hijanah Azhari, 26 – to assist the investigation.
