Kota Kinabalu: Sabah’s wushu exponents are set to deliver the State contingent’s first medal at the 21st Malaysian Games (Sukma) today (Thursday) after three of them made it to the semi-finals of the sanda event on Wednesday.
Amirah Sofea Azlan was the first to qualify after beating Johor’s See Ke Xin in the women 48kg category followed by Dione Babyline Fely in the women’s 52kg with a win over Zi Han Teo of Perak before Fyenlly Himon defeating Kedah’s Muhd Zazali Che Zahir in the men’s 52kg category.
Team manager Ronald James Tee Chee Xiang was delighted with the three making the semi-finals and is confident at least two will qualify for the finals.
Meanwhile, the Sabah men’s football team opened their Sukma campaign with a 2-1 win over Johor in the Group B tie at the Zaidi Adruce Stadium in Sibu on Wednesday.
They will take on defending champions Terengganu in the final group match tomorrow (Friday).
Terengganu had lost 0-1 to Johor in their opening match on Monday and a draw is good enough for Sabah to top the group.
The State women's team meanwhile, drew 1-1 with Pahang in the Group A match held at the Kuching State Stadium on Wednesday and they will be taking on Sarawak on Sunday.
