KENINGAU: Two more Science Centres will be established in Tawau and Sandakan this year through the collaboration of Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) to increase students’ interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (Stem).
State Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Dr Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif said Sabah currently has only one Science Centre in Keningau.
“I have been in contact with the Petronas Vice President and the Head of Petronas Sabah and Sarawak.
“They informed us that this year Science Centres will be established in Tawau and Sandakan. After that we will apply to other districts in stages,” he told reporters after officiating the Library Week 2024 at the Keningau State Library, here.
Dr Mohd Arifin said the Science Centres would be set up in libraries in both districts to increase the inclination of pupils and students in related fields.
“We are establishing a Science Centre in stages, no matter whether it is large or medium, but the important thing is in the library so that children can make references related to science and technology through the exhibitions provided.
“We aim to cultivate Stem among students because in the library there are many books related to science.
“But with the science and technology exhibition, it will certainly give added value to our children’s understanding,” he said.
On the programme, Dr Mohd Arifin said the State Library’s efforts to empower the reading culture were successful as the record showed more than one million visitors came to all library branches in the State.
“This means the library is still relevant even though there are other platforms. The library still has a place in the hearts of the community.
“It is hoped that through a programme like this, not only pupils or students will attend, but the local community should together take advantage of the library, including the existence of a science corner to attract the interest of our children,” he said.
