PUTRAJAYA: Chief secretary to the government Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar has instructed the immigration department to improve its service following negative feedback from tourists.
Shamsul said tourists had frequently reported poor treatment by immigration officers, which could potentially lead to unfavourable impressions of Malaysia being spread once they returned to their home countries.
"This is why we need to take care of them and treat them well. We have to use polite language and treat them with respect," he said.
In June, the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC) said the immigration department topped the list of integrity-related complaints received this year.
EAIC chairman Ismail Bakar was quoted by Buletin TV3 as saying that the commission received 38 complaints against the immigration department, followed by the road transport department (21) and customs department (18).
Shamsul also said civil servants should uphold the values of the Madani government and carry out their duties in line with the wishes and aspirations of the government.
He called on the National Institute of Public Administration to work with national academies to ensure that all public servants understood the Malaysia Madani and Madani Economy concepts.
Shamsul said only 14% of the country’s 1.4 million civil servants had undergone courses and fully understood the meaning of Madani, adding that the government aimed to increase this number to 50% by next year.
