PETALING JAYA: Celebrity preacher Syed Shah Iqmal Syed Mohammad Shaiful, popularly known as Da’i Syed, was sentenced to 10 years’ jail by the sessions court in Shah Alam today after he was found guilty of raping a woman five years ago.
The court also ordered Syed Shah Iqmal to be given three strokes of the rotan, Sinar Harian reported.
He will serve his sentence from today.
Following the sentence, Syed Shah Iqmal, 29, was seen crying, before hugging his wife, who had just given birth to their first child.
In December 2020, Syed Shah Iqmal claimed trial to a charge of raping the woman at a condominium in I-City, Seksyen 7, Shah Alam on Sept 11, 2019.
In April last year, the Shah Alam sessions court acquitted and freed him after the judge ruled that the prosecution had failed to prove a prima facie case against him.
Following an appeal by the prosecution, the High Court ordered Syed Shah Iqmal to enter his defence.
