PETALING JAYA: The father of the suspect who killed two policemen during a lone wolf attack on the Ulu Tiram police station on May 17 has been charged with a new offence in the Johor Bahru sessions court.
Radin Imran Radin Mohd Yassin, 62, is accused of possessing a book linked to the militant group Islamic State (IS), Sinar Harian reported.
He was charged under Section 130JB(1)(a) of the Penal Code (Act 574), which carries a maximum sentence of seven years in prison or a fine, along with the potential forfeiture of any related items, upon conviction.
In light of today’s new charge, deputy public prosecutor Yazid Mustaqim Roslan requested the court to grant Radin Imran an acquittal not amounting to a discharge on a previous fourth charge, which involved a similar offence, because of technical reasons.
Judge Rasidah Roslee granted the request before the new charge was read to the accused.
No plea was recorded from Radin Imran, who nodded in understanding when the charge was read to him.
The court fixed Sept 24 for the next case mention for Radin Imran and four of his family members, who are facing nine separate charges, including inciting terrorism and spreading the IS’s ideology.
The other four accused are his wife, Rosna Jantan, 59, and his three children, Radin Romyullah, 34, Farhah Sobrina, 23, and Mariah, 19. All the accused are represented by lawyer Arief Firdaus Ashikin.
Yazid requested additional time to submit expert reports before the case is transferred to the Kuala Lumpur High Court.
On May 17, Radin Imran’s son, Radin Luqman, stormed into the police station armed with a gun and parang and killed two constables – Ahmad Azza Fahmi Azhar, 22, and Syafiq Ahmad Said, 24.
Another policeman was injured in the 2.45am incident.
Radin Luqman, who was shot and killed at the scene, was previously suspected by police of being a member of Jemaah Islamiyah. Home minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail however denied the claim.
