UMS staff jailed for having drugs
The offence, under Section 9(1) of the Poisons Act 1952, carries a jail term of up to five years or a fine of up to RM50,000, or both, on conviction.
Kota Kinabalu: A UMS administrative assistant here was jailed a total of 18 months’ for two counts of having poison and cannabis.

Magistrate Marilyn Kelvin meted out the sentence to Shamsuddin Abdul Rahman who pleaded guilty to both charges against him.

On the first count, Shamsuddin was jailed nine months for having 97.32gm of nicotine which is listed in the first schedule of the Poisons Act 1952.

The offence, under Section 9(1) of the Poisons Act 1952, carries a jail term of up to five years or a fine of up to RM50,000, or both, on conviction.

On the second count, he was sent to prison for another nine months for having 13.58gm of cannabis.

Both offences took place at 11.10pm on June 6 this year at a house in Kg Delima Melayu, Manggatal, here.

However, the court ordered both sentences to run concurrently from the date of his arrest.

During mitigation, counsel Lim Ming Zoong @ Lawrence representing Lim who defended Shamsuddin, requested for a lenient sentence saying that it was Shamsuddin’s first offence.

In reply, Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohd Al Hakim Razak urged the court to impose an appropriate sentence on the grounds that Shamsuddin was a public servant and he should not commit such offence.
