Kota Kinabalu: Sabah will reconsider the proposal to co-host the 2027 South East Asia (SEA) Games following a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Mohd Noor on Wednesday.
Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ellron Angin, who made the announcement on Thursday, said the decision was unanimously agreed by the Cabinet ministers after examining and evaluating various aspects of co-hosting the Games.
Ellron said he would seek further discussions with the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports to gather more details of the proposal.
“I will meet with the Minister (Hannah Yeoh) as soon as possible to discuss and clarify this matter in detail.
“The feedback and related information on co-hosting will then be presented to the State Cabinet for consideration,” he said.
He also said the State government welcomes the wishes of the Federal government to organise the SEA Games and will provide full support and work closely with them to ensure its success.
The news of Sabah’s co-hosting the biennial games came to light last week when Hannah announced that Sabah together with Sarawak and Penang had agreed to provide venues for the various events.
She also said Sabah is offering RM100 million to cover the RM700 million total cost in hosting the entire competition in the country.
However, Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjin on Tuesday said he was not aware that the State government had agreed to co-host the biennial games as reported.
He also said the State government is not ready for international events as the sports facilities in Sabah still need to be improved.
