Uncertain if new gen favours Labuan’s return
Wong pointed out that Sabah is a big State and it will find it challenging to meet the development requirements of all towns and districts adequately.
LABUAN: Labuan Chinese Chamber of Commerce Chairman Datuk Wong Kii Yii said while he respects Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) President Datuk Seri Yong Teck Lee’s concern for Labuan and longing for its return to Sabah, it won’t be easy as it is a new generation now.

“It is left to be seen if a referendum to decide on the matter would receive majority support here, especially since the federalisation of the island happened 40 years ago.

“Many born the last 40 years, having enjoyed a comfortable life with improved infrastructure and amenities, may not be keen. There are also many from other states who have taken up residency here since.

“Labuan was more economically prosperous during the pre-Federal Territory (FT) years but this is unknown to this generation nor would it matter to them,” said Wong.
