PETALING JAYA: The health ministry has detected one positive mpox case of the Clade 2 sub-variant yesterday.

Health director-general Dr Radzi Abu Hassan said all 10 positive cases detected in Malaysia since July 26 last year, including the new case, have been identified as the same sub-variant.

The patient is a male citizen who began experiencing symptoms of fever, sore throat and cough on Sept 11, with a rash appearing on Sept 12, Radzi said in a statement today.

He said the patient has no history of international travel in the 21 days before developing the symptoms.

The patient has been warded in isolation and is in a stable condition, he said, with his close contacts being identified and their health status monitored.

Radzi said the ministry activated an mpox monitoring centre at the National Crisis Preparedness and Response Centre (CPRC) yesterday following the positive case.

Previously, it was reported that the ministry does not plan to implement a movement control order to check the spread of the mpox outbreak as was done during the Covid-19 pandemic about four years ago.

Health minister Dzulkefly Ahmad said this decision was made after 6.2 million travellers entering the country tested negative for the virus.

The ministry also urged the public to notify their district health offices through the e-notification system of any suspected mpox cases.
