MEMBAKUT: Some 55 Form Five students and three teachers of SMK Membakut II fell ill with food poisoning symptoms on Wednesday, believed after consuming packets of food provided by a caterer in a school programme.
Head of the school’s Parent Teacher Association (PIBG), Awang Hazim Awang Basir, said they complained of diarrhoea, vomiting and shortness of breath while sitting for a trial exam.
“All the 55 victims will be sitting for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination soon. Prior to having the symptoms, they took part in a school programme organised by Yayasan Sabah on Tuesday for them to learn the techniques of answering SPM questions.
The school engaged a caterer to provide food packets for the students and teachers. Upon hearing the complaints, the victims were rushed to Membakut Health Clinic for treatment,” said Awang Hazim.
Of the 55 students including his three children aged 13, 15 and 17, 41 and the teachers suffered minor symptoms while the rest had mild symptoms and eight were given drips for few hours at the clinic.
All the students were allowed to return home around noon on Wednesday.
