Kota Kinabalu: Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Christina Liew has expressed optimism for Sabah’s hospitality industry, describing it as entering a transformative era filled with promise and opportunity.

Speaking at the official opening of the Sabah Hospitality Fiesta and the Food and Hospitality Malaysia (FHM) Borneo Edition 2024, Liew hailed the event as a momentous occasion for the sector, calling it a pivotal point in the industry’s vibrant history.

“This is not just another date on our calendar; we stand at the threshold of a new era in Sabah’s hospitality sector,” Liew said at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) on Thursday.

The Sabah Hospitality Fiesta, launched in 1997 by the Asian Tourism International College, has long been a cornerstone of the local hospitality scene, showcasing regional talents, flavours, and cultural experiences. 

Since then, the event has evolved into a tribute to Sabah’s culinary arts, hospitality, and unique culture, attracting wide attention within the industry.

In 2006, the Sabah and Labuan Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) further elevated the event’s profile. 

According to Liew, these partnerships highlighted the sector’s commitment to fostering collaboration and growth within the hospitality industry.

This year, the event has been taken to new heights with the strategic partnership between the Sabah Hospitality Fiesta and Informa Markets, bringing the esteemed Food and Hospitality Malaysia (FHM) to Borneo for the first time.

“This powerful collaboration promises to create an unparalleled platform for showcasing the best that our sector has to offer, both from local talents and the global stage,” she said, adding that the event is set to be a hub for innovative ideas, meaningful discussions, and invaluable connections.

Despite the challenges faced by the industry in recent years, including the disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, Liew praised the resilience and creativity of the hospitality sector, stating that it has not only survived but emerged stronger.

“Our hotels, once quiet, are now revitalised and purposeful. The warmth of our renowned hospitality is again flowing through our establishments, ready to welcome guests from around the world,” she said.

Looking ahead, Liew emphasised the need to embrace change and prioritise sustainability within the hospitality industry, ensuring that Sabah continues to offer authentic, unforgettable experiences for visitors. 

She also stressed the importance of investing in the workforce, highlighting the need for comprehensive training programmes and opportunities for skill development.

“Our people are our most valuable asset. By empowering our staff with the knowledge and expertise to meet evolving guest expectations, we will raise service standards across the board,” she said.

The collaboration between the Sabah Hospitality Fiesta and FHM Borneo Edition is a critical driver of growth and innovation, offering a platform for networking, showcasing industry trends, and fostering development within the sector.

As Sabah’s hospitality industry looks to the future, Liew urged stakeholders to build on the lessons learned during recent challenges and continue pushing the boundaries of creativity and innovation.

“The road ahead may present challenges, but I am confident that, united, we will overcome them. Together, we will create hotels and experiences that not only meet global standards but set entirely new benchmarks for excellence,” she concluded.

Liew thanked the organisers, sponsors, and participants for their dedication to the event and warmly welcomed Informa Markets for their collaboration.

The partnership, she said, signifies the immense potential seen in Sabah’s hospitality industry and is expected to bring a wealth of knowledge and opportunities to the region.

“The future of Sabah’s hospitality sector is not just bright but truly radiant. 

“Together, we will write a new chapter in our industry’s story –one of renewal, growth, innovation, and unparalleled success.”

The Sabah Hospitality Fiesta and FHM Borneo Edition 2024 runs from Sept 26-28 at SICC. Themed “Cultivating Solutions for the Food and Hospitality Industry”, visitors will be treated to a spectacular showcase featuring over 150 leading local and international brands. 

A key highlight of FHM Borneo Edition 2024 is the Trend Talk series, a programme of insightful sessions where industry experts will share their knowledge on the latest trends, challenges, and opportunities in the food and hospitality sector. 

The Sabah Hospitality Fiesta will host an exhilarating culinary and hospitality talent showdown.  With 30 categories spanning professional and apprentice levels, the SHF Competitions will showcase the best in culinary arts, beverage preparation, and hospitality services.
