Kota Kinabalu: A 29-year-old man was sentenced to five years’ jail for carrying a kerambit knife in public.
Sessions Court Judge Elsie Primus meted out the sentence to Zahiruddin Zainurrain who pleaded guilty to the charge against him.
He was found having the scheduled weapon without lawful intent at 5pm on Aug 23 by the roadside near Tristar Recycling Sdn Bhd in KKIP Industrial Zone 2, Manggatal, here.
The offence under Section 7(1) Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offences Weapons Act carries a jail term of between five and 10 years, and whipping, on conviction.
The court ordered Zahiruddin to serve the jail sentence from the date of his arrest.
The court heard that a police team saw a man, later identified as Zahiruddin, behaving in a suspicious manner at the area.
The police then stopped Zahiruddin and upon checking, the kerambit knife was found inside his sling bag.
He was then brought to police station for further action.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Sofia S. Sawayan appeared for the prosecution while Zahiruddin was not represented.
