RANAU: A family of 10 on their way for dinner in a van had a lucky escape when the vehicle skidded and plunged into a 50-meter gorge, near here, Thursday night.
Head of BBP Ranau Station, PPgB Ridwan Mohd Taib said, the incident happened near the Nickgold Resort Kundasang accommodation at about 7.50pm.
“A call was received at 7.56pm and eight personnel led by the Operations Commander, PBK II Wasli Saupin rushed to the location.
“Arriving at the scene 20km away, we found that there had been an accident involving a Urvan van that fell into a 50-meter deep ravine.
“There were nine victims who were lightly injured and an elderly victim who was trapped. Firemen succeeded in removing the trapped victim using special equipment,” he said.
According to Ridwan, all victims between the age of 4-68 were sent to the Ranau Hospital using EMRS and Ambulance.
“After making sure there was no more danger, the operation ended at 9.50pm,” he said.
Meanwhile, he called on all motorists to be extra careful when driving in the district, especially on narrow and bending village roads.
“People are asked to be more careful when driving in rainy weather conditions as well as damaged or under-repaired roads.
“Always be attentive while on the road and give good cooperation to other road users. Do drive slowly especially when travelling on uneven roads.
“Drive prudently and be sensitive to the surrounding conditions, because we all want to reach our destination safely and meet our beloved family,” he explained.
