MALAYSIAN filmmaker Adele Lim, who wrote the screenplay of “Crazy Rich Asians” and Disney’s “Raya and the Last Dragon”, and directed “Joy Ride”, is set to direct the sequel to “Princess Diaries”, reported
Variety.
“As a diehard fan of the original ‘Princess Diaries,’ I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life,” Lim said in a statement.
“We look forward to celebrating its core tenants of female power, joy and mentorship with audiences worldwide.”
The film is produced by Debra Martin Chase, who originated the film franchise starring Anne Hathaway as Mia Thermopolis, the down-to-earth teen-turned-queen of the fictional kingdom of Genovia, and Julie Andrews as her regal grandmother.
The third movie will not reboot the series. Instead, it is expected to continue Mia's story from “The Princess Diaries” and “The Princess Diaries: Royal Engagement.”
While Hathaway is confirmed to star in the upcoming sequel, it is unclear if the rest of the original cast will return for the sequel. Most of them have expressed interest in reprising their roles.
