SANDAKAN: Elopura Assemblyman Calvin Chong said residents in Sandakan continue to face difficulties purchasing essential items such as regular chicken eggs, subsidised cooking oil and local rice.
He said consumer complaints reveal limited supply of basic necessities which are often priced higher than usual.
Many consumers have reported needing to visit multiple supermarkets — sometimes more than five — just to secure these items.
Adding to their frustration, grocery stores and supermarkets have begun limiting purchases per customer.
He observed that while omega eggs are more readily available, their higher price leaves consumers with little choice but pay more.
Chong urged the authorities to implement more effective measures to address this shortage, as the burden on Sabahans continues to grow.
He also raised concerns about illegal practices, accusing certain parties of diverting supplies to businesses for profit, leaving ordinary consumers empty-handed.
He called on the authorities to closely monitor the distribution and sale of these essential goods.
