BIMP-EAGA Games: Sabah emerge runner-up

GL Oh: Sabah contingent as Team Malaysia B emerged runner-up at the BIMP-EAGA Games  held in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan, which concluded on Thursday.

They failed to defend their overall title won in Brunei four years ago after collecting a total of 17 gold, 16 silver and 19 bronze medals to finish behind Philippines A (Mindanao A) who won 31 gold, 39 silver and 22 bronze medals to top the medal tally.

A total of nine teams took part in the five-day biennial games and in third place was Indonesia (South Indonesia) with 14 golds, eight silvers and six bronzes, while Labuan as Malaysia A finished in seventh place with two golds, four silvers and three bronzes.

Sabah was represented by 67 athletes aged 16-19  and they participated  in archery, athletics, karate, pencak silat, sepak takraw and swimming.

Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ellron Angin had earlier called on the athletes to give their best and tried to defend their overall title. He also said the athletes should grab the opportunity to gain exposure and experience by competing in an international event.

Meanwhile, at the last meet in 2018 before the biennial games  was put on hold due to the Covid pandemic, Sabah topped the medal tally with  23 gold, 17 silver  and 15 bronze medals.
