PUTRAJAYA: A NGO has urged the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to investigate a Sabah Umno leader for allegedly receiving millions of ringgit in “commission” for a project in the State.
Gerakan Kuasa Rakyat Malaysia (G57) Chairman Datuk Zulkarnain Mahdar said a probe was necessary to verify the allegations, made in relation to a public hospital project in Sabah. The allegation has gone viral.
“MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki previously expressed his commitment to investigate all complaints on platforms like Facebook and TikTok related to corruption. That’s why we are here today to lodge a report. We are requesting MACC to investigate whether the allegations (relating to the public hospital project) are true.
“If they are, then action must be taken because the public deserves to know,” he told reporters at the MACC headquarters here.
He said the senior Sabah Umno leader implicated in the matter should also issue a denial and file a police report if the allegations were untrue to prevent the issue from becoming a prolonged controversy.
“I believe this issue has been circulating for over a week, but to date no statement has been made by the Sabah Umno leadership.
“Not a single person has come forward to deny these serious accusations.”
Zulkarnain, who is also a former Umno activist, emphasised that he lodged the report with MACC not to tarnish the reputation of any Umno leader but rather to seek justice in the matter.
