PETALING JAYA: A 23-year-old e-hailing driver has been charged in the Kuching magistrates’ court with killing a 28-year-old woman earlier this month.
No plea was recorded from Zakwan Mokhtar as the case will be transferred to the High Court, The Borneo Post reported.
The charge was framed under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which provides for the death penalty, or at least 30 years in jail and caning, upon conviction.
Zakwan was placed under further remand since murder is a non-bailable offence. Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura fixed Feb 10 for case mention.
Zakwan is accused of murdering Nurul Asikin Lan on Dec 6 and robbing her of her jewellery so that he could watch the national football team play Cambodia in Phnom Penh in the AFC Championship.
Separately, magistrate Ling Hui Chuan sentenced Zakwan to three months in prison after he pleaded guilty to lodging a false police report to deny a Facebook post claiming he had abducted Asikin.
He committed the offence under Section 182 of the Penal Code at the Sentul police headquarters in Kuala Lumpur on Dec 10.
