Report is lodged over online posting

TAWAU: The Youth Wing of Sabah Gagasan Rakyat Party (PGRS) for Sri Tanjong lodged a police report on Friday against political activist Fahmi Reza. 

The report concerns an alleged insult to  Sabah Head of State, Tun Musa Aman, through a caricature that went viral on social media.

Fahmi posted a photo of himself holding a provocative caricature poster in front of the Maybank building on Jalan Pantai, Kota Kinabalu.

The report was filed at the Tawau District Police Headquarters (IPD) around 4.30pm by members of the PGRS Youth Division Zone 12, which covers Balung, Apas, Sri Tanjong, Kukusan, Merotai, Sebatik and Tanjung Batu.

In a media statement uploaded on the official Facebook page of PGRS Youth Sri Tanjong, it was said that the report was made to uphold the dignity of the Sabah Head of State institution, which symbolises the state’s sovereignty and the unity of its people.

“We take this matter seriously, as it is deemed to have crossed the line and showed lack of respect for the position and role of the TYT as the Head of State,” the statement read.

It said freedom of speech should not be misused to insult or tarnish the reputation of any party, especially key state institutions like the TYT.

“We urge the authorities to promptly investigate this matter and take stern action.  We also call on the people of Sabah to stand united in rejecting provocative acts that could lead to division or tension. Respect the rule of law and the sensitivities of our community,” it said.

The PGRS Youth wing said it remains committed to defending the interests of the people of Sabah and safeguarding the sovereignty of the state from any attempts to undermine its key institutions.
