Kota Kinabalu: Amanah Sabah said the action of putting up caricatures in various places in the State by peninsula artist Fahmi Reza is tantamount to insulting the office of the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sabah (TYT).
Its Chairman, Lahirul Latigu, said such actions are uncivilised and can threaten the harmony and unity of the people of Sabah.
He said the TYT is not just an individual but an important institution in the state’s administrative structure, a symbol of the sovereignty, unity and stability of Sabah which plays a major role in maintaining the integrity of the state’s administrative system.
“TYT is the Head of State who holds an important position in the Malaysian Constitutional Monarchy system. Although Sabah does not have a king like states in the Peninsula, TYT replaces that role as a symbol of state sovereignty,” said Lahirul.
He also stressed that the position of TYT appointed by the Agong makes him the highest representative of Sabah within the framework of the Federation of Malaysia.
Therefore, insulting His Majesty not only reflects a lack of respect for the state symbol but also challenges Sabah’s relationship with the Federal system.
He said Amanah Sabah acknowledged the importance of freedom of expression guaranteed by Article 10 of the Federal Constitution, but that this freedom must be used responsibly.
“Any action that insults the state symbol, including His Excellency, is against the values of etiquette and morality of Malaysians, especially Sabahans who are known for their culture of respect,” he said.
He reminded that such insults could spark tension among Sabahans who are rich in tradition and customs.
“Any insult to His Majesty is tantamount to degrading the dignity and identity of the state of Sabah itself,” he added.
He called on all parties, including artists and activists, to be more sensitive to the sensitivities of Sabahans.
Criticism and satire should be done in a civilized and responsible manner so as not to tarnish the state’s dignity.
