PUTRAJAYA: Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak today urged the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) to reconsider the charges against him in the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) case.
Najib’s call follows remarks made by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on December 21, where he acknowledged that the prosecution of several high-profile cases in 2018 had been flawed, rushed, and driven by “venom and enmity.”
Najib argued that his own 1MDB trial had been rushed and flawed, claiming that he was the victim of “political prosecution” and “politically motivated” charges.
“But now that Prime Minister Anwar has recognised these systemic flaws, there is an opportunity for rectification,” he said.
“Not through the courts, which must remain independent, but through the Attorney General’s Chambers.”
He added, “I firmly believe this highlights the urgent need for a comprehensive review of the prosecution against me, particularly as the charges were prepared even before my statement was recorded.
“This clearly shows that the prosecution was tainted from the outset by venom and enmity.”
Najib also pointed to Anwar’s acknowledgment of the flaws and political bias that have marred some prosecutions, stressing the importance of the Attorney General’s Chambers reflecting on the charges brought against him.
“A review of these charges, in light of these concerns, would be a significant step toward ensuring justice is served and restoring public confidence in the integrity of our legal system,” he said.
As of today, Najib has completed reading four sets of his witness statement, totalling 692 pages. This includes the first 525 pages, which were split into two bundles, an additional 147 pages, and 20 pages of further witness statements.
Najib’s 1MDB trial before Judge Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah resumes tomorrow afternoon, with the former finance minister expected to continue his testimony.
