SEMPORNA: A man was killed when the Nissan Urvan van he was driving collided with a Toyota Vigo at KM51 of Jalan Kalumpang, Semporna-Tawau, Thursday.
The Chief of the Semporna Fire and Rescue Station (BBP), Madzlan Sarman, said his team managed to extricate both victims using Road Traffic Accident (RTA) equipment.
He said the driver of the Toyota Vigo sustained severe injuries.
Both victims were trapped in their respective vehicles.
“The team arrived at the location, 51km away, at 8.07am and immediately began operations to extricate the trapped victims,” Madzlan said.
However, the van driver, believed to be in his 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene by the medical team.
Meanwhile, the driver of the four-wheel drive, aged 38, sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Semporna Hospital by ambulance for further treatment.
It was reported that the van driver was traveling from Semporna to Tawau, while the Vigo driver was heading from Tawau to Semporna.
Earlier, a team of seven firefighters, along with two fire engines, were dispatched to the scene after receiving an emergency call about the incident at 7.32am.
The operation concluded at 8.50am, after ensuring there were no further hazards at the scene.
