LAHAD DATU: The Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) in Lahad Datu received a total of 288 emergency calls in 2024, marking a 25 per cent decrease compared to 384 calls recorded in 2023.
BBP Lahad Datu Chief, Sumsoa Rashid, said the calls comprised 87 fire incidents, 191 rescue operations, and 10 special service tasks.
The estimated losses from fires in 2024 amounted to RM3.7 million from RM14.9 million worth of property involved, reflecting a RM2 million reduction compared to
RM5.7 million in losses from RM46.8 million worth of property in 2023.
“In terms of property saved, 75.24% of the affected assets were successfully salvaged in 2024, compared to 87.94% in 2023,” said Sumsoa.
He attributed the decrease in emergency calls and fire-related losses to heightened public awareness of fire safety, road safety, and water activity precautions.
“This decline demonstrates the positive impact of public awareness campaigns conducted by BBP Lahad Datu,” Sumsoa said.
However, fire-related incidents in 2024 resulted in one fatality, while rescue operations recorded 13 deaths, with road accidents being the primary cause, followed by crocodile attacks.
Sumsoa also highlighted a rise in false alarm calls, with three cases reported in 2024 compared to just one in 2023.
“Although the number is small, it indicates that public awareness about the offense of making false calls remains low,” he said.
Efforts to further enhance safety and awareness will remain a priority for BBP Lahad Datu to continue reducing incidents and losses in the coming years.
