SANDAKAN: Efforts to upgrade markets across Sandakan are underway, with local authorities focusing on addressing infrastructure issues and improving facilities.

Deputy Chief Minister II Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam said the Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS) is working diligently to identify and implement necessary improvements for markets.

“We are reviewing all markets in Sandakan to determine the repairs required. Together with MPS, we are working hard to ensure these upgrades are carried out effectively,” said Joachim, who is also State Housing and Local Government Minister.

Joachim, also Acting President of Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS), said this when met after a PBS Chinese New Year walkabout at several markets, here, Saturday.

Cosmobeauté Malaysia and beautyexpo will expand into East Malaysia with the launch of the Cosmobeauté Malaysia Borneo Festival 2026 at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) from May 25 to 26.
Addressing concerns about water shortages affecting the area around Karamunting, Joachim assured that the issue would be investigated with MPS to find solutions.

“We will look into the water problem and ask MPS to determine the cause,” he said.

On illegal markets, he explained that these were temporary situations while awaiting allocations for proper facilities.

“These are not entirely illegal; they are in a holding phase while waiting for the required processes to be completed,” said Jaochim.

During the walkabout, Joachim greeted Chinese traders and market-goers, offering mandarin oranges and Chinese New Year calendars as a gesture of goodwill.

He expressed gratitude to PBS members and division leaders – David Ong, David Fong and Datuk Linda Tsen – for their dedication in making the event a success.

The event was also attended by senior PBS leaders, including Deputy President Datuk Seri Dr Yee Moh Chai, Treasurer Datuk Lu Kim Yen, Vice President Datuk Hendrus Anding, Assistant Secretary-General Datuk Jonnybone Kurum and Youth Chief Christoper Mandut. Representatives from Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) were also present.
