Navy destroys unexploded ordnance found off Pulau Sibuan waters
The impact following the explosion.
SEMPORNA: The Royal Malaysian Navy (TLDM) mine disposal team successfully destroyed an unexploded ordnance (UXO), discovered off Pulau Sibuan waters on Jan. 7.

The Second Naval Region Command (MAWILLA 2) in Sandakan in a statement said, the UXO was destroyed at about 3.10pm by the team from the TLDM’s Diving and Mine Warfare Headquarters (MSPPA) in Lumut, together with MAWILLA 2, led by Leftenan Komander Ghazali.

The team has been set in motion for the destruction of the UXO bombs starting Jan. 10.

“The UXO, measuring three feet long and one foot wide was believed to be a remnant from the second world war around 1945 and weighing 250kg. TLDM’s Post Blast Investigation (PBI) confirmed that the UXO was an aerial bomb, a type of explosive device dropped from an aircraft,” TLDM said.

According to the statement, the UXO was destroyed using the Blow in Place (BIP) method, a disposal technique performed at the discovery site with the highest safety precautions.

No damage to property or the marine environment was reported following the process.

TLDM also received cooperation from other security agencies, including the Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom), Joint Task Force 2 (ATB2) and the Semporna District Police Headquarters.

On Jan. 7, Sabah Parks issued a temporary closure notice for Pulau Sibuan Substation, Taman Marin Tun Sakaran due to the discovery of a bomb-like object.
