799 flood­-prone areas in Sabah

KENINGAU: The Sabah Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) has identified 799 flood prone areas, including villages, urban areas, and towns.

According to Sabah JBPM Director Zainal Madasin, these areas include the districts of Penampang, Sipitang, Tenom, Beaufort, and several others across the state.

He said that JBPM Sabah is fully prepared to face the second wave of the northeast monsoon in collaboration with strategic partners.

“Our preparations are aimed at ensuring public safety in the event of floods,” he said.

“We are ready and have the necessary personnel and logistics to handle this second wave of floods. Additionally, we have Volunteer Firefighter Teams (PBS) and Auxiliary Firefighter Teams (PBB) in various districts,” he told the media during a working visit to the Keningau Fire and Rescue Station on Wednesday.

He said the readiness is due to continuous rain and thunderstorms affecting the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah.

Meanwhile, Zainal urged the public to prioritize safety during the upcoming Chinese New Year celebrations or at any time to avoid incidents such as fires.

“Ensure your home is safe by turning off electrical appliances and gas stoves after use,” he said.

Also present were Keningau Fire and Rescue Department Zone Chief Yuszaimi Hairrul Azwan Juatan and senior JBPM Sabah officers.
