RANAU: A 30-year-old lorry driver died after being trapped underneath his vehicle when it plunged into a 50-metre ravine at Kampung Nabutan here on Thursday morning.
The trailer, loaded with concrete electrical poles, veered off the road and overturned, trapping the driver beneath; firefighters arrived at the scene 31 minutes after being alerted at 8.41am.
Efforts to recover the victim involved specialised equipment and assistance from a crane dispatched from Kota Kinabalu, but initial attempts failed due to the vehicle's heavy load.
The victim was eventually freed at 2.50am on Friday after nearly 18 hours of operations, which included removing 60 to 70 concrete poles, but he was pronounced dead at the scene by police.
The operation, involving eight firefighters, police, and others, concluded after ensuring the site was safe, with the victim's body handed over to the police for further action.
