LAHAD DATU: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) detained a fishing vessel off Kunak waters, here, on Tuesday for violating licence terms.
Lahad Datu Maritime Zone Director, Maritime Commander Dzulfikhar Ali, said the anchovy fishing vessel was detained about 1.30pm off the Kunak Tiga waters under Op Pluto Timur.
Inspection results revealed that the vessel was operated by two local men aged 19 and 44 as well as a 53-years-old Filipino. All of them possess valid identification documents.
MMEA also found that the vessel was carrying 5kg fish.
“Further investigation found that the vessel was in violation of the Fisheries Act 1985 for fishing less than 1.5 nautical miles from the shore.
“The boat, crew, and catch were brought to Lahad Datu Fishery jetty and handed over to the investigation officer for further action, with the seizure estimated to be worth RM85,000,” he said.
Dzulfikhar said MMEA would not compromise on violation of the law and continue to step up patrols in national waters.
