SANDAKAN: Over 100 tonnes of waste, accumulated over several years, were cleared in a large-scale operation led by Karamunting Assemblyman, Datuk George Hiew Vun Zin, at the bridge one area, Kampung Pukat, recently.
The operation significantly improved the cleanliness in the area.
George called on local residents to appreciate the results of the cleanup by maintaining the cleanliness of the area and refraining from dumping waste into the sea.
He also urged the community to work together in preserving the marine ecosystem and the natural beauty of Kampung Pukat.
“We encourage both residents and traders to cooperate in keeping Kampung Pukat clean.
“This initiative not only attracts more tourists but also boosts the local economy and the tourism industry,” George said.
Kampung Pukat is one of the earliest Chinese settlements in Sandakan, where the community once relied on fishing for livelihood.
Today, the area is famous for seafood, dried seafood products, and salted fish, making it a popular destination for both domestic and international tourists.
However, cleanliness remains a major challenge in the area, which is located near the sea.
In conjunction with the holiday season, George invited tourists and visitors to continue visiting Kampung Pukat and purchasing local seafood products.
He said that the cleaning effort aimed to beautify the area and maintain Kampung Pukat’s positive image.
George also expressed gratitude to the Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS) for their full support, including sending a cleaning team and managing the transportation of the collected waste.
This initiative received support from the Kampung Pukat Community Association, who worked together to ensure the success of the effort.
The cleanup operation at the bridge one area involved heavy machinery to transport the waste. In just four days, over 100 tons of garbage were cleared, significantly improving the cleanliness of the area.
