FLOODING has become a recurring issue in Sabah, affecting numerous districts including Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan, Beaufort, Pitas, Tenom and several interior and east coast regions.
Flooding in Sabah is primarily caused by heavy and prolonged rainfall, often intensified by climate change. However, other contributing factors include:
Extreme Weather Patterns – Climate change has caused unpredictable weather patterns, with prolonged rainy seasons and more intense storms, increasing flood risks.
Poor Drainage Systems – some of urban areas in Sabah such as Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan, and Tawau and other districts suffer from outdated and clogged drainage systems that cannot cope with excessive rainfall.
