Shared success as Kota Kinabalu marks 25th birthday

Kota Kinabalu: The city today is the result of collective efforts by its inhabitants which must be maintained and developed, Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Sabin Samitah said.

He said Kota Kinabalu has gone through various phases of rapid and proud development since city status on Feb. 2, 2000.

“In these 25 years, we have witnessed various changes and achievements from a Municipal Council growing into a city.

“Today, we not only celebrate the success of Kota Kinabalu, but also strengthen the spirit of togetherness in ensuring that this city continues to grow. The success of this city is our shared success,” he said.

Sabin said City Hall is determined to realising more sustainable development to make Kota Kinabalu a smart, modern and globally competitive city.

“Various efforts being implemented have brought a positive impact on the well-being of the local community.

“Among them are large-scale sea and river cleaning projects, improving the beauty of landscapes and public parks, enhancing service delivery through digital transformation, empowering City Hall’s human resources and logistics, improving cleanliness levels through law enforcement, orderly development planning, and various other plans that can improve the quality of life for the residents of Kota Kinabalu City.

“City Hall is also actively implementing programs that can increase the community’s understanding of the importance of environmental conservation, including tree planting campaigns, reducing the use of plastic bags, and recycling practices.

“In terms of efforts to develop the tourism and cultural sectors, City Hall has also taken various initiatives in terms of preserving historical heritage, organizing cultural festivals, and promoting local products has also been intensified to attract more domestic and international tourists. 

“All these measures not only help boost the city’s economic growth, but also strengthen Kota Kinabalu’s identity as a progressive, sustainable, and attractive city to visit and live in,” he said.

Sabin said City Hall is also focusing on implementing smart city initiatives in collaboration with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to improve the efficiency of city management and service delivery.
