Kota Kinabalu: Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan urged residents in flood-prone areas to take necessary precautions following the Malaysian Meteorological Department’s extreme rain alert in several districts across Sabah.
The affected districts, namely Telupid, Beluran, Sandakan, Kinabatangan, Ranau and Kota Belud, are expected to face continuous heavy rainfall through today (Wednesday), raising significant concerns about floods, landslides and rising river levels.
“I advise residents to relocate to safer areas and avoid staying near rivers and other high-risk zones,” Jeffrey said, calling on community leaders and local authorities to assist with evacuation efforts.
“We must prioritise safety over property,” he said in a statement, Tuesday.
Jeffrey, who is also Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry Minister, pointed out his Ministry’s proactive flood mitigation efforts, including drainage system clearing and river improvement works.
However, he cautioned that these measures cannot completely eliminate flood risks.
“I wish to take this opportunity to inform the public that my Ministry has been both vigilant and proactive in our approach to flood mitigation.
“Through the clearing of drainage systems and the widening and deepening of rivers as well as the continuous progress on various flood mitigation projects, we are endeavouring to ensure that any floods which do occur will not be as severe as in previous events.
“However, these measures, while significant, do not completely eliminate the risk of flooding. Therefore, it remains imperative that all residents stay alert and prepared for any eventuality,” he said.
He said the Government, through the State Disaster Management Committee, relevant agencies and local authorities, is closely monitoring the situation and will provide assistance as needed.
“I encourage the public to stay informed through official channels and follow the latest updates from MetMalaysia, the National Disaster Management Agency and the Sabah Government.
“In case of emergencies, please contact your nearest disaster operations centre or local authorities for assistance.
“Let us all take the necessary precautions and work together to ensure the safety of our families and communities.
“Stay safe, stay alert and prioritise your well-being,” he said.
