SANDAKAN: A restaurant at the airport here was ordered by the Ministry of Health Sandakan Office to close for 14 days under Section 11 of the Food Act 1983.
Sandakan Health Department inspectors issued the notice on Monday (Feb 3) after carrying out a check on the restaurant following public complaints about cleanliness.
A notice of the closure was posted on the front entrance of the restaurant.
According to vendors at the airport, it was the first time a premises at the complex has been ordered to close for breaching hygiene regulations in the last 40 years.
Tourism operator Alexander Yee welcomed the order, as cleanliness must be maintained at all food outlets.
He said as the country prepares for Visit Malaysia 2026, it is important that visitors have confidence in the quality of services here from their point of entry onwards.
