City Day Open Regatta: Chia wins for third year running
All the winners with officials and guests after the closing ceremony.
Kota Kinabalu: Chia Ching Byn claimed a hat-trick as she captured the International 470 Open overall title for the third year running at the 24th City Day Open Regatta held at the Kinabalu Yacht Club (KYC) on Sunday.

She and crew Jayden Raphael Chin Yi Jae topped the standing ahead of Muhd Afiq Irsyad Adam/Melvin Sikayun followed by Haron Muzaffar Abdul Aziz/ Abby Adriana Fabian Evaristus.

Haron/Abby also claimed the veteran title in the same class while the 420 class went to Bibi Qeesha Mohd Faizal/Natasha Wong See Kei.

The overall title in the ILCA (International Laser Class Association) 7 was won by Qasha Chairullah with Anas Shaidi Johari taking second place and Aiman Afiq Saiful Kamal in third.

The Class 6 title went to Mohd Syahieradham followed by Zeti Irdina Zinal and Nur Hafizahananti Zailan, while the top three winners in Class 4 were Muhd Aiman Aqeel Mohd Firdaus, Muhd Iftittah Andi Mallabbang and Adam Iwan Carraz.

In the Kitesurf overall, the men’s title was won by Sandeep Singh Gill followed by Abidin Aliakbar and Jason A. James.

The women’s title went to defending champion Amabel Seow Min Hui with Kelly Yin and Angeline Wong in second and third place respectively.

The Windsurf Open overall title was captured by Zeid Ashraf Zainal and second place went to Mitchell Lloyd Cini.

In the Windsurf Closed category, Abidin Aliakbar was the men’s winner ahead of Nick Boura and Mitchell Lloyd Cini, while Gabi Tan Shir Ping and Amabel Seow Min Hui were the top two winners in the women’s division.

In the Optimist overall, Ziqri Luqman Zainal finished ahead of Muhd Abqaari Irham Adam and Macy Mosom Sikayun, who also clinched the girls’ title with Natalie Wong Qiao En and Nur Farisya Shahfiah Rodie in second and third.

Ziqri Luqman was also winner in the A Division followed by Natalie Wong and Nur Farisya. The B Division title went to Muhd Abqaari Irham Adam and in second place was Mavy Mosom with Muhd Harith Qaiser Ahmad Mokhdas in third, while the C Division title was won by Ahmad Wafiy Azzam Mohd. Resal .

In the SUP (stand up paddle board) long distance races, the winners were Lisa Poronting, Reena James, Susan Pan Yin Hsia (women’s 17 above); Mohd Aswad Chong, Koh Yen Hsiang, Andrew Ang (men’s  17 above); Sebastian Spiji James, Deston Lim (boys’ 16 under).

Some 100 rowers including representatives from Kinabalu International School (KIS) participated in the annual event.

The closing ceremony was officiated by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya who also presented the winning prizes while KIS principal Samuel Gipson gave away the SUP KIS Cup.

Also present were KYC commodore Albert Shim, club officials and members as well as the parents.

Meanwhile, the KYC Harvest Festival and Sabah Fest Open Day Regatta 2025 will be the next event to be held on May 31.
