Kota Kinabalu: A 59-year-old man was jailed five years for repeatedly taking syabu.
Sessions Court Judge Amir Shah Amir Hassan meted out the sentence to Ahmad Awang who changed his plea and admitted to the charge against him on his supposedly trial Thursday.
He was found taking the drug at 11.50pm on Feb 17, 2024 after his urine tested positive at the police station here.
Ahmad has three previous conviction records for taking the drug.
The offence under Section 39C (1) (b) of the Dangerous Drugs Act carries a jail term of between five and seven years, and whipping, on conviction.
The court ordered the accused to serve the jail sentence from the date of his arrest.
No whipping was imposed on Ahmad due to his age.
After completing his jail sentence, Ahmad was ordered to be placed under police supervision for three years.
During mitigation, Ahmad asked for leniency saying that he is old and looking after his family.
However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurul Shaferrah Mad Iskim urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence as Ahmad had repeatedly taken syabu.
