Helping young Sabahans connect with their roots
Shahshi said the Book Creator app, which is available online, makes the stories accessible to a wider audience. He believed his work would benefit individuals, including Sabahans who have migrated abroad.
Kota Kinabalu: Stories have the power to bridge gaps between cultures and help young learners connect with their heritage.

Using the Book Creator app, Shahshi Davien Thomas @ Dave, 40 , made a book featuring characters such as Aki, a young boy inspired by the majestic Mount Kinabalu, and Ekko, a gecko lizard commonly found in Sabah, symbolizing the local wildlife and everyday life.

Through the stories, teachers can explore and represent the diverse ethnicities and cultural practices found within Sabah. Dave said making the stories relatable to local children is essential.

“This approach creates an educational resource that highlights the richness of their heritage,” said the former teacher who is now with IPG Tawau. The goal is to develop a series of engaging stories that are accessible to children, ultimately fostering a love for reading and storytelling in their mother tongue.
