SIPITANG: No action has been taken by the Public Works Department (JKR) despite bringing to its attention the road damage from Kg Bamban to Kg Mendulong more than a month ago.

Expressing disappointment over the lack of concern by JKR officers to the community’s complaints, Sipitang Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS) Chief Pius Ganang, said no JKR official even bothered to come and inspect the situation.

“The affected road is heavily used by the local community, with villages such as Kampung Bamban, Kampung Mendulong, Kampung Ulu Bole, Kampung Meligan, Kampung Iburu, Kampung Long Mio, and Kampung Long Pasia relying on this road,” he said.

“This road is vital for residents, not only for transporting agricultural products, which is the backbone of the local economy, but also for daily commuting, particularly in transporting patients.

“I have received complaints from the staff of the Mendulong Health Clinic about this issue. They want JKR and the concessionaire to maintain the road, which is difficult for them to use, whether transporting patients or traveling back to Kampung Meligan,” he said.

The situation worsens when transporting patients, especially expectant mothers, as the damaged road delays their journey to the hospital, jeopardising their health and the health of patients.

Pius also said the damaged road is causing difficulties for teachers traveling to Sekolah Kebangsaan Mendulong, and that students, many of whom travel by motorcycle, are also affected.

Pius suggested action on the JKR staff who failed to inspect or monitor the roads under their responsibility and stressed that small issues like this should not be allowed to escalate into a larger problem for the government.

He urged Sindumin Assemblyman, Datuk Yusof Yacob, who is also the Chairman of Qhazanah Sdn Bhd, along with Sipitang Member of Parliament, Datuk Matbali Musah, to take greater interest in this issue and to instruct JKR and the concessionaire to fulfil their duties and responsibilities.
