Kota Kinabalu: Children must be taught of responsible water use and environmental awareness at a young age to appreciate and preserve the State’s water supply.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said Sabah, despite being known for its rich natural resources, is still facing multiple challenges.
“Therefore the importance of water and its plumbing must be taught at a young age so that safe sanitation, responsible water use and environmental awareness can be instilled in Sabahans,” he said at the World Plumbing Day celebration at Hakka Hall on Sunday.
His speech was read by Assistant Minister of Finance Tan Lee Fatt. Hajiji said he wanted the Sabah Plumber Association (SPA) to work closely with relevant authorities to ensure pipes in the state are installed properly to avoid leaks and subsequent wastage.
He said the celebration is a renewal of commitment for efficient plumbing management in Sabah. “This commitment is outlined in the Sabah Maju Jaya Development Plan which emphasises the people, education and the economy,” he said.
Hajiji stressed that not only the government, but companies, the community and individuals are directly responsible for appreciating water and eliminating its wastage to achieve efficient management.
“The State Government is committed to resolving legacy issues like water and power, roads and public infrastructure in line with Malaysia Madani,” he added.
Meanwhile, SPA President, Carmen Wong, said they would be focusing on four key aspects this year.
This includes improving professional skills and training, strengthening industry and government cooperation and promoting innovation and the environment sustainability.
“We want our plumbers to be always equipped with the latest technology and skills, fight for better policies for the progress of this sector, and ensure efficient and sustainable management of water resources.
“We hope to receive greater government attention in developing this industry and improve the living standards of workers in the plumbing sector. “Water is the source of life, and the plumbing system is the key to ensuring that this resource continues to flow safely to every home. Our responsibility is not only to ensure a clean water supply, but also to take this industry to a higher level,” she said.
Additionally, Carmen said the association is actively implementing ESG initiatives by holding educational programs in schools to foster early awareness of the importance of water conservation and the important role of the plumbing industry.
