Kota Kinabalu: Sarawak will begin supplying excess electricity to the southern Philippines via Sabah starting next year.
The move is in compliance with a request from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim made earlier. The power will originate from a 500-megawatt (MW) combined cycle gas turbine power plant in Miri, supplemented by three additional Bintulu plants with a combined capacity of 1,500 MW.
Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced this initiative at the Affin Bank Chinese New Year Dinner, highlighting Sarawak’s growing role as a major energy producer within Asean.
This initiative leverages Sarawak’s abundant energy resources and contributes to the development of an Asean energy grid.
The Premier also emphasised Sarawak’s ongoing efforts to increase synthetic gas production for sustainable energy generation, further solidifying the state’s position as a regional energy powerhouse.
