Illegal jailed, fined for promoting online gambling
The charge under Section 4(1)(g) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, provides for a fine of between RM5,000 and RM50,000  and up to three years imprisonment and in addition liability of a fine of between RM5,000 and RM50,000 for every gaming machine seized.
Kota Kinabalu: A 22-year-old undocumented woman was jailed two months and fined RM5,000 or jailed six months by the Magistrate’s Court here for promoting online gambling using handphones, last year.

Syafikah Abdullah pleaded guilty before Magistrate Marilyn Kelvin to promoting online gambling through a gambling application to customers on Dec 9, 2024, at 3.30pm at a unit in a condominium, Jalan Bundusan, Penampang.

The court was informed that police seized four smartphones from Syafikah during a raid on the said unit.

Counsel Lim Ming Zoong, who represented Syafikah, requested a lenient sentence, as she is unemployed and had been under remand for two months. 

Lim also said that Syafikah had taken the job in order to take care of her sick mother.

Inspector Yusdi Basri prosecuting, applied for a deterrent sentence and for Syafikah to be referred to the Immigration Department as she has no document.

Marilyn ordered Syafikah to serve the jail sentence from the date of her arrest and be referred to the Immigration Department, thereafter.

Meanwhile, a 25-year-old man was charged with assaulting a man.

Reemmi Abdul Rahman pleaded not guilty to voluntarily causing hurt to Muhd Ruhaiezal Jairul Shah on Jan 30, this year, at 8.15pm, by the roadside of Kg Gudon, Manggatal.

He was charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code.

Reemmi was offered bail of RM1,700 in two sureties pending pre-trial case management (ptcm) on March 26.

In another case, a 36-year-old man was charged with keeping a stolen passport, two years ago.

Sebastian Cherinos pleaded not guilty to keeping the stolen document belonging to Tan Yew Chow on Aug 24, 2023, at 9.30pm, in front of the Taiwan Buddhist Tzu-Chi Foundation Malaysia, Likas.

Sebastian allegedly committed the offence under Section 411 of the Penal Code along with a man still at large.

The court set April 21 for ptcm and released the accused on a bail of RM2,000 in two sureties.
