Residents of Cyber City want end to water cuts

Kota Kinabalu: The Persatuan Cyber City Apartment Phase 1 and 2 comprising residents wants transparency and better handling of water supply in their residential area due to persistent disruptions. 

“We hope for transparency in the management of Cyber City when handling important matters involving utilities, especially water,” said Persatuan Cyber City President Padan Labo.

The residential complex houses some 6,000 residents across 3,112 units in Phases 1 and 2. 

“Water rationing started in September last year, with residents only getting water from 5am to 9am and 5pm to 9pm daily. “Since January this year, under a new manager, our water rationing improved slightly. “Today, residents have 20 hours of water supply daily, from 4am to midnight,” he said.

“The management failed to properly address the water issues by replacing or improving the existing water storage tank and connecting pipes. “We have repeatedly reminded the management to upgrade their water storage system, but unfortunately have yielded no satisfactory resolution to this issue,” he added. 

”We do not want water rationing. We want smooth and sufficient water supply,” he said.

“There have been instances when murky water flowed through our taps for several minutes after the pipes are opened, thus raising concern about water safety and management practices.” 

He said the Government announced a shutdown to repair a crack in the main pipeline along Jalan Penampang on Feb 7.

Residents’ patience grew thin when faced with a 26-hour water crisis from Feb 8 despite announcement by the Government of water pressure gradually returning to normal. 

Adding fuel to the fire, the management’s alleged reluctance to open the residential area’s main water pipes, citing power conservation concerns, triggered anger among residents. 

The tension reached boiling point when some 100 residents demanded the management to open the main water pipes prompting security guards manning the area to call the police. 

“After the management finally agreed to open the main pipes in Phase 2, residents also demanded the same for Phase 1. Residents in both phases have become like siblings helping each other due to this water problem,” he said.
