SANDAKAN: A 58-year-old man, who committed physical sexual harassment against his granddaughter’s friend, was jailed seven years.

Sessions Court Judge Zaini Fishir @ Fisal meted out the sentence to Otuh Absarin, who pleaded guilty to committing the offence against the 11-year-old girl by inserting his finger into the victim’s private parts at 3pm in 2023 at a house, here.

The offence under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 carries a jail term of up to 20 years, and whipping, on conviction. The court ordered Otuh to serve the jail sentence from the date of his arrest but no whipping due to his age.

The court heard that the incident happened while the victim was at Otuh’s house to play with his granddaughter who was the victim’s friend.

When his granddaughter fell asleep, Otuh pulled and forced the victim to sit on a sofa before committing the sexual offence against the victim.

Following a police report lodged by the victim, Otuh was arrested on Feb 8 at a house here. Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhammad Azizi Hamil appeared for the prosecution while Otuh was not represented.
