A man who allegedly strangled his child due to dissatisfaction with his wife’s divorce application and Fasakh claims was arrested on Friday.
Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said the foreigner, believed in his 40s, was also reported to have threatened to hit the woman during the incident at the Taman Semarak residential area.
“The suspect was arrested by a team of officers and members from the Criminal Investigation Division (BSJ) of the Tawau District Police Headquarters (IPD) in the Tawau town area around 2.20pm on Friday,” he said.
The suspect is believed to have frequently harassed the victim, who works as a saleswoman, since the divorce application was filed by the woman last year.
In the latest incident, the suspect was reportedly aggressive and choked their child before threatening to harm his wife.
Jasmin said the victim immediately lodged a report to seek protection.
The suspect was brought to the Tawau District Police Headquarters for further investigation under Section 323 and 326A of the Penal Code for causing injury and criminal threats.
Police take domestic violence cases seriously and would take strict action against any individual who threatens the safety of family members.
In another case, police arrested a 33-year-ld man who went on rampage at Kampung Saddani, Batu 2 Jalan Apas, on Wednesday.
Jasmin said the suspect also punched the wall of a 59-year-old woman’s house before grabbing a machete and threatening the victim with intimidating remarks.
The victim lodged a report fearing his aggressive behaviour and verbal threats.
“A background check revealed that the suspect has four prior records related to criminal offences and drug abuse,” he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation.
